The Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM) offers postdoctoral fellowships twice a year with starting dates in September and March. The fellowships are for one year, renewable for a second year depending on performance.
Candidates interested in taking up a fellowship at the Centro de Radioastronomia y Astrofisica (CRyA) in Morelia, Michoacan, should apply directly to the CRyA. Applications should not be made to more than one Institute or Center of the UNAM.
Fellows are expected to carry out original research in any area of astrophysics, collaborating with faculty and/or students. The main selection criteria will be outstanding research accomplishments and promise of future achievement. Fellows will have access to the San Pedro Martir National Astronomical Observatory, Baja California. Astronomers at Mexican institutions have competitive access to the EVLA, the VLBA, and to ALMA, via a collaboration with the USA National Radio Astronomy Observatory; they can also compete for the Mexican share of observing time on the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). The CRyA has extensive computing facilities on site including a purpose-built high-performance computing center. The CRyA provides funds for publishing, and limited support for observing and traveling.
APPLICATION PROCEDUREInterested applicants should contact Dr Jane Arthur well in advance of the official deadlines mentioned above.
Before applying, candidates should ensure that they meet the minimum requirements - any application not meeting these requirements is automatically rejected.
Applicants should send a cover letter, an abstract of their Ph.D. thesis, a complete curriculum vitae including a full list of publications, and two letters of recommendation to Dr Jane Arthur at the CRyA (sacad@crya.unam.mx). It is also required to submit a research project, which should be defined jointly together with the researcher at the CRyA with whom the candidate intends to work. A full list of faculty and their research interests can be found via the CRyA web page (www.crya.unam.mx) by following the links to CRYA, then Directorio, and finally Investigadores.
If the application is selected by the CRyA's internal council, the applicant will be required to fill in an application form and submit a copy of their birth certificate and PhD certificate (if available). All documents can be sent scanned in pdf format. It is not necessary to send originals.
INCLUDED BENEFITSThe fellowship is tax free and includes health insurance (for self, spouse, and children).
STIPENDSThe fellowship stipend is 16 minimum salaries, currently 28700 pesos per month (the exchange rate is approximately 13.00 pesos/US Dollar).
SELECTIONThe fellowships are assigned by a specialist University comittee in the natural and physical sciences, and the CRyA will be assigned one or two each semester.
